What Westport Owners Refit, and When

204 documented entries on the 14 Westports for sale that publish their work. Which systems get done, at what age the big refits land, and who did the work, from the listings themselves.

The Short Answer

Engines First, and the Big Refit Around 16

Of the 19 Westports for sale on the YATCO MLS and YachtWorld as of October 26, 2026, 14 publish dated refit and maintenance records, 204 entries in all. The work that shows up on the most boats is main engines and drivetrain (12 boats), then electronics (11). The big refits land at a median of 16 years after launch.

Because Westport builds the same models in series, these records read like one long maintenance log for the line. For a buyer they say what an older Westport is likely to need next; for an owner they show what the market expects to see done before a sale.

By System

What Gets Done, Boat by Boat

Each row counts the boats whose listing records work on that system, with links to each boat's full record.

Timing

When the Big Refits Land

The main refit each listing describes, ordered by the boat's age when the work began.

7 of these 8 refits began between 11 and 21 years after launch; the median is 16 years.

Machinery

Engines, Generators and Air Conditioning

Main engines. The two listings that give hours put the main engine overhaul or half-life service at 6,000 to 6,200 hours: Island Girl's twin MTU 12V2000s at 6,000 hours and Trust Fun's MTU 12V4000s at 6,200. Others were overhauled by age and condition: Kemosabe at 17 years in 2024, Legacy and Bravo Zulu at 22 years, in 2025 and 2026.

Generators. Trust Fun's generators had a top-end rebuild at 6,000 hours; Determination's at 10,000. Ostara fitted larger ones of about 100 kW.

Air conditioning. This is the Florida item. 10 of the 14 boats with records show air conditioning work, and chillers were replaced on boats of every age, including Rennegade, built in 2018, which took new titanium chillers in 2024.

Who Did the Work

Yards and Specialists Named in the Listings

Contractors as the sale listings name them. Listed for reference, not as an endorsement.

Most of the contractors named are South Florida yards and specialists, and most of these boats lie in Fort Lauderdale. Getting yards to quote the same written scope, and holding them to it, is the job Greg does on a managed refit.

For Buyers

Read the Record Before the Price

Two boats of the same year can be a refit apart. The 2006 Lila Cuy and the 2006 No Shortcuts ask $1,500,000 apart, and their records explain it. Ask for the dated maintenance log, compare it with the table above, and price what is missing into the offer.

Five of the boats for sale publish no dated work at all. That does not mean nothing was done; it means the buyer has to ask. More on choosing between hulls in the Westport 112 buyer's guide.

Common Questions

Westport Refit Questions

When does a yacht need a major refit?

On the Westports for sale today, 7 of the 8 major refits recorded in the listings began between 11 and 21 years after launch, with a median of 16 years. The exception is a 1989 hull refitted at 33. Timing follows use and maintenance, not the calendar, so a survey decides it for a given boat.

What needs replacing on a 20-year-old yacht?

Across the 14 Westports for sale that publish their records, the most common work is main engines and drivetrain (12 boats), then electronics (11). Exterior paint, teak and stabilizers follow. The full table, boat by boat, is on this page.

How many hours before an MTU main engine overhaul?

Two of these listings give the hours: Island Girl's twin MTU 12V2000s were completely overhauled at 6,000 hours, and Trust Fun's MTU 12V4000s had their half-life service at 6,200 hours. Others overhauled by age and condition, from Kemosabe at 17 years to Legacy and Bravo Zulu at 22. MTU's own schedule and an engine survey govern any individual boat.

How much does a yacht refit cost?

Industry estimates put a systems refit at about 10 to 20 percent of the vessel's value and a major refit at 20 to 40 percent; the breakdown is on the yacht refit management page. Two listings give real totals: Rule No. 1's 2023 to 2024 refit at almost three million dollars, and more than $6,500,000 invested in Unbridled's refits since launch.

What is the 10 percent rule for yachts?

It is the common rule of thumb that a crewed yacht costs about 10 percent of its value a year to run, often quoted as 8 to 10 percent. It is a planning estimate: the program, the crew and the boat's maintenance history move it. See what a yacht costs to own.

Can Greg manage a refit on a boat I am buying?

Yes. Greg Gaus spent more than twenty years as a working captain running yard periods. He scopes the work before you offer, prices it into the deal and manages the yard period after closing. On a brokerage purchase the commission is paid by the seller.

Planning a refit, or buying a boat that needs one?

Greg Gaus spent seven years selling Westports inside the builder and has closed the line from the 112 to the 164. He represents you through survey, sea trial and closing. On a brokerage purchase the commission is paid by the seller.
