The 72 carries the same twin MTU 16V2000 M96L pair as the 92, 2,635 hp a side, in a hull twenty feet shorter. That is the appeal: near-flagship power and rigging in a boat a smaller crew can run, and one that fits marinas the 92 has to negotiate for.
Greg’s sold archive runs the Viking range from the 45 Open up to a Viking 90, and a Viking 72 is in it. He spent 20+ years running boats before he sold them, which is the difference between reading a spec sheet and knowing how a tired hull behaves at cruise in a head sea.
As of September 2026 the 2024 Viking 72 “Lady Surfbum” is asking $7,750,000 in Jupiter, Florida, on 90 engine hours. Older hulls in the same size band sit far lower: 74-footers from 2004 to 2008 are asking $1.3M to $1.99M, and 76s from 2010 and 2015 sit between $3.1M and $3.495M. Model year and rigging drive the number, not length. Asking prices are not sold prices.

It depends entirely on the year. Right now a 2024 72 asks more than double any 74 or 76 on the market, because those hulls are fifteen to twenty years older. If the budget is $2M to $3.5M the 74 and 76 are where the boats are; if it is $7M and up, the 72 is the current-generation answer. Greg will put the real candidates side by side rather than sorting by length.
The ratio of generator hours to main engine hours tells you more than the hours themselves: a wide gap means the boat lived at the dock with everything running, which ages air conditioning, electrical systems and accessories far faster than running offshore does. Then tower and outrigger mounting, whether the electronics have been kept current or patched around a failure, and whether paid crew or an owner ran the boat.
